Second Opinions on Immigration Cases Serving Northern Virginia, Maryland & DC

If something about your immigration case does not feel right, you are allowed to ask. Maybe a lawyer told you there was nothing to be done. Maybe your case has been sitting for months with no update. Maybe you were given advice that sounds too simple, or too risky. A second opinion immigration lawyer at USG Law Group gives you a confidential, no-pressure review of where your case really stands, in English or Spanish.

When to call a second opinion immigration lawyer

Immigration law is federal and complex, and good lawyers can disagree. Asking a second lawyer to look at your file is not disloyal to the first one. It means you take a decision that affects your family seriously. People come to us in situations like these.

  • Another attorney declined your case or told you that you have no options.
  • You feel unsure about the advice you received and want someone to explain it in plain words.
  • Your current lawyer does not return calls, and you do not know what has been filed or what comes next.
  • A notario or consultant prepared your paperwork and you are worried something was done wrong.
  • You received a denial, a request for evidence, or a notice to appear in immigration court (EOIR) and want to understand your choices.
  • You are about to sign and file something important, such as an N-400, a waiver, or an asylum application, and want a check before it goes in.

How a second opinion consultation works

A second opinion is a focused review, not a sales pitch. We look at the documents, listen to your story, and give you a straight answer.

Everything you tell us is confidential, whether or not you decide to work with us. You do not have to tell your current lawyer that you are getting a second opinion, and we will not contact anyone without your permission.

  • You book a free initial consultation by phone, Zoom, or in person, and send us copies of your documents by email ahead of time.
  • We review what has been filed, what the government has said, and what deadlines or court dates exist.
  • We explain, in plain language, what your current path is, what the risks are, and whether there is another option.
  • You leave with a clear picture. If a full case review or a FOIA request is needed to answer your questions, we tell you that honestly before you decide anything.

What USG Law Group checks when we review your case

We go through your file the way we would if it were our own case from day one.

  • Eligibility: whether the path you were put on actually fits your facts, and whether a better one exists, such as adjustment of status instead of consular processing, or a waiver you were told you could not get.
  • Accuracy: whether the forms, statements, and evidence are complete and consistent, because mistakes on past filings can follow you.
  • Risk: whether filing something now could expose you to problems, such as an old removal order or a misrepresentation issue.
  • Status: whether your case is actually moving, and whether a case inquiry or other step may be appropriate.
  • Deadlines: whether an appeal, motion, or response window is open and how much time remains.
  • The record: whether a FOIA request is needed to confirm what the government has on file before anyone takes another step.

An honest assessment, even when it is not what you hoped for

Sometimes the first lawyer was right. If the advice you received is sound, we will tell you so, and you can go back to your case with more confidence. We do not take cases away from other attorneys by promising things they could not.

Sometimes the first lawyer was right about the law but did not explain it well, and what you really needed was a clear explanation. And sometimes there is a real problem: a missed option, a filing error, or a deadline that is coming up fast. In that case we explain what can be done, what it would involve, and what the realistic risks are.

What we will not do is guarantee a result or tell you what you want to hear. Immigration cases are decided by USCIS officers and immigration judges, and no lawyer controls the outcome. What a good lawyer controls is the quality of the preparation and the honesty of the advice.

Switching lawyers, if you decide to

You have the right to change immigration lawyers at any point, including in the middle of a case or while you are in immigration court. If you decide to work with us, we file a new notice of appearance (Form G-28 with USCIS, or Form EOIR-28 with the court), request your complete file from your previous attorney, and take over communication with the government. Your prior lawyer is required to return your file and documents.

Changing lawyers close to a hearing or a deadline takes planning, so the sooner we talk, the more options you have. If you are not switching and only wanted clarity, that is a good outcome too.

Why families in Northern Virginia, Maryland and DC come to USG for a second look

Clients tell us what they notice is that we explain everything in detail, which is exactly what a second opinion should be. Attorney Marianela Uribe is licensed in Maryland and Virginia and serves clients in Washington DC. She is an immigrant herself and knows how it feels to depend on advice you cannot fully check. Attorney Sandra Leiva, licensed in Maryland, reviews immigration court (EOIR) and detention matters.

We meet by phone, Zoom, or in person at our Woodbridge office near Potomac Mills, with evening and Saturday appointments. The first consultation is free, and payment plans are available if you decide to move forward. For related help, see our FOIA Requests, Deportation Defense, and BIA Appeals and Motions to Reopen pages.
